Skills are a vital part of your CV, and there are a few ways to add them. Before we dive into how to add them to your CV, it’s worth noting that there are two main types of skills: soft skills and hard skills.
Soft skills are essentially personal attributes and abilities that are required for every job. They are the people skills that help us read our colleagues, manage situations and perform well in a workplace environment. Hard skills, on the other hand, are learnt through formal courses and training. They are part of the essential skill set needed to do the job successfully, and as a result, are job-specific. You will find hard skills ‒ the specific knowledge and abilities required for success ‒ listed in a job description.
When applying for a job, look at the job description and make sure the skills required are reflected in your CV. You can zoom in on your hard and soft skills when listing your duties and achievements throughout your employment history, or in your education and qualification sections.
You could list your skills on your CV in this way:
Communication: Clearly relayed information to customers in a friendly manner, resulting in a five-star service rating.
Or, you could address your skills this way:
Generated a five-star service rating thanks to my ability to clearly relay information to customers in a friendly, confident manner.
Both structures are acceptable, and both clearly show the prospective employer that you’re skilled in communication. The key is to support your skills with concrete examples.
Here’s how not to address your skills on your CV:
Strong communication skills
Use bullet points and keep your statements short and punchy to leave a positive lasting impression.
